My sister Maisy invited me out to her place for her 40th birthday celebration. After much thought and preparation, I joined her for a week. Thanks to my hubby for taking over when I was gone.
Days 1 & 2
Flew in late on March 20th. The next day, headed to the Capitol Building and got a tour.
After the Capitol tour, we went over to the Library of Congress.
We saw the Gutenberg Bible and some other jewels.
Went to the Botanical Gardens then had lunch at the Indian Museum.
The rain came pouring down and we made the most of it. Cute little Jake had a ball.
And quickly checked out the Air and Space Smithsonian museum on our way out.
Gave the kids some balloon swords and taffy. Thanks to Maisy's family for being so welcoming!
Day 3
After a rough morning, we got Maisy's van battery replaced and we were on our way to NYC!
We stopped on our way in Delaware for some lunch.
We arrived to our Queens rental. Right upstairs on top of a pizza joint!
Rode the subway, then checked out Times Square.
Had Maisy's birthday dinner at Hard Rock Cafe. I got a jalapeno burger. She got sung to + ice cream!
Had a blast playing the piano at FAO Shwarz toy store.
Then walked the streets of New York at night. Steam really does come out from the sewers!
Day 4
Headed up to the top of the One World Trade Center and saw some cool views. Then walked past a cemetery right in the middle of downtown.
Went to the World Trace Center Museum. Here are some facts about the Center:
- 50,000 people worked there
- Each building had 110 floors and stood 1/4 mile high
- They had 10 million square feet of rentable space
- They had a combined 43,600 windows that took 2 months to wash
- Each building took 1 acre of space
- It had its own zip code: 10048
- On a clear day, a person could see for 45 miles in every direction from the observation deck
- The Trade Center was home to 430 businesses from 28 countries
- They took 7 years to build and opened in 1973
Each of the 11 members of the 3 FDNY Ladder Company 3 died when the tower collapsed on them and their truck. Took my breath away.
All the 40,000 windows shattered during the collapse. Only 1 windowpane from the 82nd floor survived and was preserved in the museum.
This museum was the most touching thing of the whole trip. There was one part where photos were not allowed that had every victims name and trivia about the people. Some even had items in cases that represented hobbies like sports stuff or sewing stuff. All of this wing was reverent and somber.
We checked out the reflection pools.
Then it was time for our windy boat ride and tour of the Statue of Liberty!
After a pizza slice, we visited Macy's with Maisy.
Then we saw WICKED!! The best show ever with the best seats ever. Row 3 baby!
Rode the subway back and slept well after a full day.
Day 5
Attended church in the 2nd floor of the Manhatten Temple! Seriously, one of the best meetings I've been to. 2 African American convert ladies shared their touching stories of conversion.
Got some gyros and cookies.
Then headed over to Central Park and hung out.
Said goodbye to New York! And headed back to Maryland.
Day 6
Headed to the Smithsonian American History Museum. The Wizard of Oz stuff was especially fun to see since we had just gone to 'Wicked'. We also saw a van that looked like ours growing up, and President Trump and Lincoln's hat.
Then we checked out the National Mall by scooter. And had Cafe Rio for dinner. Pretty fun day!
Day 7
Then it was back to Utah. What a great siblings trip!!!
